See this, skip that: Panama City, Panama

Apr 16, 2018

In just the last few years, Panama City has won renewed recognition from American travelers. Easy access to the Panama Canal, easily one of the great wonders of the modern world, helps. But the way history melds with a cosmopolitan vibe has many modern-day explorers flocking to the city's vibrant streets and sprawling shores. If you’re planning your first trip to Panama’s capital city, here are a few things not to miss.

Do the stopover

Copa Airlines, the flag carrier of Panama, makes it easy for flyers to get a quick taste of Panama City with its Panama Stopover. Traveling from L.A. to Santiago? Spend a few nights in Panama City for free – just long enough to want to return for a longer visit soon. You can request a layover either coming or going, but you do have to confirm your itinerary with Copa reservations before you book your ticket. Copa flies to a slew of South American and Caribbean destinations from 13 U.S. gateways, including New York City, Las Vegas, Miami, Denver and San Francisco....

Monkey, Sloths and Gators, Oh My!

For a unique way to experience the canal, try checking out a half day tour with Xplora Panama on the Jungle Boat/Monkey Island Tour. The tour includes a boat ride where you’ll see massive ship liners and get to see the canal from a unique angle that truly puts the grandeur of the operation in perspective. The boat ride continues over to ‘monkey island’ - don’t be alarmed with the bravado of the Joffrey monkeys as they come out of the trees and jump into your boat looking for apple slices and possibly wallets….

Aside from a variety of monkeys (Howler, White Face), you can see both two and three toad sloths, crocodiles, iguanas, morph butterflies, birds and even a crested owl. If time permits, take a walk through the Rainforest Discovery Centre for a trek as beautiful and unique as the country of Panama itself.

*Insiders tip - Ask for Alex as your guide! He is experienced and a passionate naturalist who is knowledgeable, kind and absolutely goes the extra mile to make your tour special.

The Green Club Indoor Golf Centre

If you’re in the mood for a unique experience (or if the weather isn’t ideal), check out the Green Club in Panama City. The Green Club is an indoor golf centre that offers the latest technology in golf simulators allowing you to virtually play the most famous tracks across the globe. The precision and realism is phenomenal. There’s a pro shop, putting green and coaching area along with a lounge with drool-worthy burgers (try the ‘Big Easy’) - then go hit some more balls to work off the calories, oh, and a beer of course.
